5 out of 5 stars noisy performer   November 9, 2008
granted - this thing is noisy.
but - it gets the job done fast

also a very reliable reader - managed to copy some of the old CDs that my previous drives (including one in a brand new lenovo laptop) could not read... this thing just zoomed for a few more minutes than usual and managed to get the data

1 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and avoid this item   October 28, 2008

BACKGROUND:

I was building a server that exclusively featured 15K rpm SAS and SCSI-320 drives. I thought that I would take the next step and avoid a PATA DVDrom drive.

EXPECTATION:

I desired a SATA DVDrom drive so that I would not have any jumpers to set or PATA cables to clutter my computer chassis. I was not concerned about SATA I or II speeds. I surmised that the drive would be used perhaps four times a year.

REALIZATION:

Amazon delivered this item to me and it looked great. I was assigned to another "hot" project and then another department. The end result was that I purchased the drive in April 2008 and it set in its retail box until the middle of October 2008. I was building another workstation and I needed to install the OS. I attached a new SATA cable and one of the SATA power leads from the new PSU. The system would not boot although it had previously run the past 24 hours. I disconnected the power cable from the drive and the computer powered on. No way! This item was DOA, but I had not had the opportunity to test it for six months and now I was stuck with it. It does have a 12 month warranty so all is not lost. This is the first time that I have received a DOA DVD/CDrom.

CONCLUSION:

I thought that my case were an anomoly, but a quick google search revealed that this drive has very poor reliablity. I recommend that you avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased with the drive   October 15, 2008

I have had this drive for about 6 months now and I use it entirely too much. I am not going to put a technical review of death up here. I cannot match the lovely one that has already been done by Wayne Beckham (who is wrong about having to use Nero to use the lightscribe feature)

I have burned through about 4 50 disk spindles so far. I am the family dork, so I get to help people transfer their weddings, birthdays (no births, because, uh, NO) and almost everything else. Each disk has been a lightscribe disk. I do not use the included software for the lightscribe labeling (I use SureThing, if you are interested). I would agree with many that even on Best it is not dark enough. If the disk is for me, I run it through a second burn on draft to darken it up. The images are not a professional label quality, this is not a professional labeling device. It is, however, a very nice looking monochrome and PERMANENT label.

I will give the rest of us "Geek of the Family" out there a word of warning. You might end up burning a lot of stuff for family members because of the ability to make a non-peelable label that looks pretty nifty.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but I am a bit surprised   September 21, 2008

First of all, I am surprised that it did not come with all the hardware necessary to hook it up. It had the SATA data cable, but did not come with the power cable adapter. Guess what, it isn't really a stock item at most of the retail stores. So, I had to wait another week while I ordered the power cable connector from Amazon (after wasting a day driving to a bunch of retail stores).

Next, I am a bit surprised at how flimsy the door is. I added this unit to a PC in my house that my children (4-7 years) use often for their games. Frankly, I am worried about it. We'll see how it lasts. As for the over all performance of the drive and writer, I give it an "as expected" score. It works. No thrills, it works.

Still, come on, supply the required hardware with the product Lite-On! Or at least let me know that it is not included! Very big pain in the B-hind! Check your PC before you order!
