Amazon.com Product Description

Also ideal as neighborhood watch tools and kid-sitting aids, each state-of-the-art radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 142 privacy codes per channel to help reduce interference.

Stay in touch with friends and family with these easy-to-use GMR1588-2CK 15-mile, two-way radios. View larger.
Another great attribute of the GMR1588-2CK radios is hands-free operation, via a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that can be used for automatic voice transmission. Transmission begins when you speak into the optional remote headset for snappy, hands-free communication that is both safe and efficient. The large number of channels and privacy codes give you several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with your friends and family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. Plus, the channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses to active channels while you watch the display. And the channel monitor function listens for weak signals on a given channel with the press of a key. If you're communicating with a group, the GMR1588-2CK is also equipped with an auto-channel change feature that automatically changes everyone in your group to a new channel to avoid confusion and interference.

The GMR1588-2CK radios offer additional privacy and safety features. If you're having a conversation with sensitive matter, these radios offer a voice scramble feature that prevents outside monitoring. Plus, you can also select the "Direct Call" function that lets you call one of the people in your group privately without everyone knowing. And for added safety, these radios receive emergency and weather broadcasts from the NOAA National Weather Service. When in Emergency/Weather mode, the radios monitor the selected emergency/weather channel for alerts, even when you're not actively communicating.

Additional features include a backlit LCD display that is easy to read under any lighting conditions, a keypad lock that prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and a choice of five different call tones that offer distinctive ring options to easily identify who's calling. You can also operate these radios in silent mode to avoid bothering others, or if you just need a quick volume adjustment, the rotary volume/power control makes it easy to turn the volume up/down and shut the radio off in a snap. The radios are also equipped with a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch, a key beep audio confirmation of each button you press, and a "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking. The built-in headset jack is for the optional headset mic, which enables hands-free operation. The radios are equipped with dual-location charging units that make it easy to keep your radios charged and ready to go, and they can also be powered by four AAA alkaline batteries (not included).

5 out of 5 stars Great item!   February 23, 2008
I was really impressed with the quality of this product even at the low price. Definitely will come in handy on vacations or when traveling in more than one vehicle.

1 out of 5 stars Big waste of money   February 19, 2008
These two-way radios are a waste of money. The battery life is too short to get much use out of them. They're going to Goodwill and I'm shopping for something better quality. I can't believe Uniden put their name on such a bad product.

5 out of 5 stars Best buy for your buck!!   January 1, 2008

I used these camping with two others who also had them...set them to group setting and can use them like telephones between the three of us. You can call individuals or the whole group and you program in a name for each radio so when it rings you even know who is calling. For my use, in the RV park/Campground they couldn't have worked better...worth ever penny!! Am even planning on buying a few more units to give out as gifts. We also used them while off-roading in the mountains and they worked great...now I never tested them over a 3 mile seperation so I can't comment on the long range aspect but for 3 miles and under 5 stars!!!

4 out of 5 stars 15 Miles or 1.5?   December 25, 2007
Great set of walkies aside from the glaring fact that they can't achieve ranges past a couple miles in dense urban areas or 4-7 miles in flatter, more open terrain. The functionality and options on this set are fantastic, especially the group features which you can read more on at the uniden site.

Overall if you're looking for a nice pair with a good feature set, get these, but keep in mind the actual range is about 30% - 40% of the advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Uniden Two Way Radio   October 5, 2007

My husband and I have used alot of different two way radios in our vehicles. And we found this product to be the best, mostly due to the radios having the capability of being charged with a dc adapter. Other radios will lose their charge by the end of a long day of driving. Which means we lose communication with the other vehicle. With the Uniden GMR1588-2CK we can charge the units while we are driving so there is no need to replace batteries while we drive. This feature alone sold us on this prodcut and it has been worth every penny we spent. We did learn that if we allowed the radio to have a low battery and then plugged in the dc charger cord that the radio will not transmit or receive while charging a low battery. But if the radio is fully charged first, we found we could plug the radio to the dc outlet during our entire trip and the radio will work just fine.
