Impressed with the sound and features and great price!November 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm actually set on getting the Onkyo S6100 to go with my 52" Samsung and PS3. While still saving for it, i tried at one time the Sony CT-100 which did not satisfy me since i ended up wanting the surround effects (no fault to the CT100). While browsing and reading some very good reviews with this system which also has the HDMI inputs i needed to go with my PS3, i decided to give this a try. The box was small than i expected and while unpacking the speakers i started to feel a bit skeptical if it will sound good. Set-up was easy and only took me maybe a couple hours including running the wires.(my first time to run wires and the color coded connections really helped a lot). Connected the PS3 to the receiver and then to my TV through HDMIs, fired it up, auto calibrate (which was really easy) put in the '300' Bluray and went directly to the fight scenes. All i can say is WOW! (like the other reviewers here) I can hear the small cracks, rattles, arrows swishing and it felt like my ear was twitching with the great sounds i'm hearing. I can really hear sound moving around and through the room and really was very immersed in the movie. Watched a few more movies (Hulk, Crank) and played games and this system is really sounding really good. This is basically my first 5.1 system but hearing other systems (separates) from friends, i could say that with this system i could easily match those and maybe even sound better. The base and sound are very good. I don't even have problems hearing the dialogues coming from the smallish center speaker. I only have 20x15 living room and this 5.1 system really fills the room very well and i'm starting to wonder if the 7.1 Onkyo might be an overkill now. I'm impressed that all of the great sound i hear are done without the volume really high and i'm only around 18-22 volume level. I may just as well save a couple of hundred of dollars with this system which is really good enough for my needs.
Update: Apparently, i wasn't too content so i returned it and got an Onkyo S6100 7.1 system, after hooking all things up that's when i realized this Sony was a great buy. It matched or out performed the Onkyo with less the hassle. I was expecting the Onkyo to blow this thing out of the water but i was struggling to adjust, recalibrate the Onkyo to at least sound as good as the Sony. Yes the Onkyo had fuller sound but this Sony has that clear and crisp sound not to mention better sounding dialogues from that center speaker. I have to crank the Onkyo to about 40 to 50 sound level before i can hear that surround sounds. With this Sony HTIB i barely even stay on 25 volume. The Onkyo i believe would be good buy long term but for the price difference i would go back with the SS2300.
Dear God in heaven save my soul from audio-death!November 5, 2008 0 out of 24 found this review helpful
This Sony HT-SS2300 sound system murdered my father and gave syphillis to my sister. I think the subwoofer may be possesed because my dog now levitates and I never taught him that trick.
Good Reason to Not Buy Electronics OnlineNovember 1, 2008 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
After installing the unit, and spending 2.5 hours on the phone with Sony, they concluded it was a defective unit. I have the option of sending it all back to the seller (which means taking the speakers off the wall, and un-doing the wiring), or sending the receiver to Sony Repair Center in Texas for 2 weeks, and I get to pay for shipping.

Crisp, clear sound resonating through my apartmentOctober 14, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had no idea sound could be this good. I purchased this unit as an upgrade to a Dolby Prologic unit made by Pioneer (which still sounds great after more than a decade of dedicated use). I've connected this unit to a BDP-S350 blue ray player and a KDL-40W4100 HDTV. All I can say is wow. The 5.1 channel audio comes out great and really immerses the viewer into the movie scene. I'm sure that I'll be hated by the other apartment units adjacent to my own. There are so many options available for audio playback. The only drawback I see is the speaker wire, which oddly enough,is also a benefit somewhat. The speaker wires, of course, are of fixed length. The problem is that Sony has made wire connection to the receiver a specific design. Now this design makes it easier and more managable to install the speaker units into the receiver (the benefit). However, this also requires the owner to purchase additional wire (or new wire)if needed from Sony (smart, and greedy). Other than that, I'm very happy.
