5 out of 5 stars Best computer I have ever had   August 15, 2006
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I have had this computer for 7 months and I still think it is the best purchase I have ever made. It is beautiful, efficient, and FAST! Never has the computer "locked up" on me, crashed, given me cryptic error messages, or taken more than a few seconds to open a file. My ONLY wish is for a two button mouse, as I still have to work on a clunky Dell at the office, I have never fully adapted to the one button mouse. This is a good, quality product that will last years. I purchased a video iPod shortly afterwards and I just love how the two products work together seamlessly.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for techno geeks   August 7, 2006

The iMac G5 is an excellent computer for both the novice and the techno geek. Their ads are not just hype. It really is out of the box easy to use and with the assortment of usable software that comes with the G5, it will meets the needs of most users. The iPhoto combined with my digital camera is great. A zippy dependable machine that doesn't require constant updates, patches, and restarts. I use both PCs and Macs but this is the computer I chose for my home. My iMac is a useful tool rather than a time draining frustration.

5 out of 5 stars I was there from the beginning...   November 8, 2005

I have owned many Apple products starting with the Apple //e. I have owned an Apple //c as well. My Macintosh products include the original 1984, 128K Mac, 512K Mac, Mac SE30, Mac Quadra 700, Mac Centris 610, Mac Color Classic, two versions of the G3 iBook, iMac DV, iMac that looks like a Luxo lamp, and the iMac G5. Do I know Macs? Well, not as well as some, but better than most. The iMac G5 is not my favorite. The Luxo lamp G4 iMac is a nicer form factor and I am sorry Apple abandoned it. However, that said, the G5 iMac is awesome. It is fast and its footprint is small. The sound is weak but nothing a nice set of inexpensive speakers will not solve. However, out of the box, the iMac G5 is wonderful.

Oh, in case you are wondering, I am also a PC user, also from the early 1980's. I have seen Apples ahead of PC's and vice versa. If you can buy just one computer, and do not need a laptop, buy this one (or one of its slightly newer models). There is NOTHING this computer can not do (except crash due to spyware and viruses).

1 out of 5 stars Switch? Whatever.   October 4, 2005

Just purchased an iMac 17" 2.0 GHz with an upgraded RAM of 1.5GB. I'm a photographer who decided to switch to Apple because of their reputation of stability and ability to handle graphics quickly. Was I wrong.

I tried downloading images in a JPEG format that were approximately 2 MB in size. It required almost 5-7 sec per image vs. my buddies 4 year old Dell 1.8GHz with 256 MB RAM doing it at appoximately 2 sec/image. The computer also continued to crash if I tried operating other applications during this process. Next day tried to make a book with the iPhoto application. Repeated crashes. Had to open and close the program to save each change while working on my project. This added painful hours to my workflow. Additionally, you can not view thumbnails of your images in the file folder. Couldn't figure out why this feature was missing.

The worst thing was the service. I called the shop that I purchased it from and they offered no solution to the speed problem. "At least the CD downloaded completely" was their answer. The most painful aspect was that they deferred the store's sales policy to whatever Apple dictated. Ridiculous. I don't buy a product from Amazon and expect to be directed to the manufacturer of the product should any concerns arise.

I was told by a sales person that at the time of purchase that I was entitled 1 service call to Apple for first 90 days of my purchase. After that call or after that time period, the calls would be charged $60/call. Be wary of the limited support.

If you're gonna switch, understand that there is limited support for you compared to other PC companies.

I was so disgusted with the service and product that I returned my mac and paid the 15% restocking fee that they charged. I essentially paid Apple to take back their product.

If you've had positive experiences with this product, congratulations. I wish I shared that same experience.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Machine   September 28, 2005

I absolutely love this computer. I bought it from the Apple Store in early July and could not be happier. In the three years before buying this computer I owned two laptops which spent more time being sent to HP's tech support (in all that time I never once encountered someone who spoke English fluently) than they did being used. I may never find out what Apple's tech support is like because this computer has no problems whatsoever.

I have the base model, which does not include the superdrive. The iLife suite covers all your basic needs with programs that work well, a big improvement over the junk which tends to come on windows.

Another hugely useful feature is dashboard. Go on the widgets page on [...] to see the many useful widgets you can download and access by hitting F12. The function keys are generally well used by Apple. F9 shows you all your open windows, F10 shows you all the windows open in a particular application and F11 minimizes all the windows.

Another thing that I love is that basically anything can be simply plugged in and used. You don't usually need to install anything. This made the switch much faster, since I didn't have to reinstall programs for my digital camera, printer, etc. It also connected to my school's network instantly, whereas most PC users had many more troubles.

But the final reason I love my Mac is how pretty it is. It just looks great on my desk. When people see it, they compliment me on my nice moniter, and are always surprised when I tell them it's the entire computer.

Overall, I definitly recommend this computer.
